Philosophy

Science is something people do. Science is based on the idea that things happen for a reason and the reasons can be discovered using logical methods of inquiry. Science takes the place of opinions, guesses and superstition. Science education then, should be a process of engaging students in methods of inquiry that allow them to discover how the natural world works. Unfortunately, science education too often means reading about what others have done and discovered. In science education, like sports for example, interest and motivation to excel come from active participation.

Just like young athletes, young scientists require proper equipment and “coaching”. The great majority of science equipment needs not be expensive and should be available to all students. Science educators must master the rules of science and the art of “coaching” for success. Investigating how the natural world works is exciting and fun for young people. When students are active and successful participants they are motivated to remain engaged. All science teachers can experience the excitement of success in their classroom.
